I am not much of a drinker.  Where I come from in the Philippines we did not have much money to spend on luxuries like alcoholic beverages.  When I got here to the US, I have tried a few things but have only acquired a taste for a few sweet and bubbly wines.

Now that my hubby has retired from his engineering business, our overall income has dropped dramatically. His retirement is not nearly what he was making as an engineer but we still live comfortably. We have a car that is less than two years old, a fishing boat and all the rest of the amenities including a nice rainy day nest egg that we can dip into if there is an emergency. My income from blogging is just enough to be able to keep paying down our bills while sending money to the Philippines to put my younger siblings through college and help my parents when there is an emergency.

I was very worried when the engineering business started to taper off and he decided to retire. I was afraid I wouldn’t be able to send money to the Philippines anymore but my hubby never got worried even though we have some bills left to pay off. According to him the secret to living comfortably is not how much you make but making sure that you don’t spend more than what comes in and as it turns out he is right. I recently ran across this video on CNN and this guy who is selling a book talking about how to survive this tough economic times said essentially the same thing.
